Why Character Counts and Byte Counts Differ

Separate whitespace rules, UTF-8 bytes, and a receiving site’s custom limits.

Identify the actual limit

A count with spaces differs from one without them. Newlines and special characters may be counted differently by the receiving form.

UTF-8 bytes are not the same as a legacy two-byte estimate, especially for Korean letters and emoji. Check the submission site’s rule before relying on one number.

Check the final draft

Text Cleaner can remove blank lines and repeated spaces, but review the meaning afterward. Avoid sharing a private draft just to compare counts.
