JPG, PNG, or WebP: Choosing an Output Format

Pick an image format based on photos, transparency, and upload compatibility.

Match the content

JPG or WebP works well for most photos. PNG or transparency-capable WebP suits logos and images requiring transparent pixels.

Converting an image re-encodes its data; simply changing a filename extension does not.

Watch for lost properties

JPG cannot preserve transparent areas. Converting an animated GIF to a still format may discard animation.

Compare the actual file size and visual result. A new extension does not guarantee a smaller file.
